THE BIG STINK - Garlic Lover's Festival
Sunday 8th March 2009 10am - 4pm
Fundraiser for Coastguard Volunteers
Join the garlic-lovers as they come to sample food from various vendors all made from "the stinkink rose" - GARLIC! We invite you to abandon your mouthwash and head for the peninsula. This is a great family event. Mark your calendar to attend the Portobello Farmer's Market Garlic-Lovers Festival. You'll be healthier and happier for it.
The festival is also a local community fundraiser for the coastguard volunteers. There will be live entertainement; various stalls selling produce made from garlic; competions and a fundraiser raffle.
AIM OF FESTIVAL
When Jan McLean, one of the Portobello Farmer's Market organizers, visited the garlic restaurant called The Stinking Rose in San Fransisco many years ago, she thought she had died and gone to heaven. A restaurant serving every dish made with garlic! There was roasted garlic, smoked garlic, pickled garlic. Garlic steak, garlic chicken, garlic chips, garlic bread and many more dishes.
After having experienced a night at ÒThe Stinking RoseÓ, Jan knew she wanted to host a garlic festival some day. Well that day has arrived!
What better way to celebrate the harvest season of garlic and it's food-enhancing benefits than with a fundraising festival at our Sunday farmer's market through music, delicious food, live cook-off, camaraderie and fun.
We aim to enhance the community of the Peninsula through raising awareness and funds for our coastguard volunteers - our unsung heroes!
Coastguard volunteers' service is a group 45 dedicated modest professionals. Helping out others is what they do! Aside from the actual water rescues on the rescue vessel, they also spend many hours training; maintaining the vessel, equipment and fundraising. They need funds to operate and are currently refurbishing a 4 wheel drive vehicle to tow the main vessel. and are always training so they are ready at a moments notice to go to a rescue. They go out in all weathers and serve the coastline as far away as Oamaru.
This is a great opportunity for the Otago community to get behind them and support their efforts. We never know when we will need them. Dunedin in fact Otago is surrounded by the sea and there are many yatchies and recreational fisherman rowers etc who can have an accident at anytime. They teach water safety in schools
Our festival is a way for the community to show their appreciation as well as having a good fun family day out.

Michael Van de Elzen, Molten Restaurant, Auckland
Michael Van de Elzen started his cooking career at the tender age of 14 and worked at various Auckland restaurants till he left the sunny shores of New Zealand for London in 1998. During his time in London he worked for the internationally renowned restaurateur Terence Conrad's Bluebird Restaurant. This job saw him enjoy many unique experiencing including heading up the team for the opening of the Tate Modem Museum in London serving 5000 guests; serving many of London's high profiles and celebrities as well as running Bank, a 1000 cover a day restaurant in the financial precinct of South Bank London. After his stint in London, he moved to London with his partner Bea (a dedicated and accomplished hospitality professional) and was the head chef in a small luxury hotel which earned a Michelin star during his time there.
Armed with a lifetime of work experiences Mike and Bea returned to New Zealand in 2003 to open their own restaurant. Molten in Mt Eden, Auckland - was opened in 2004 serving a contemporary European menu combined with fresh Kiwi ingredients and an array of boutique wines. It was a winning combination and continues to be so. In 2008 they open a wine bar adjacent to the restaurant called Liquid Molten serving dishes designed to be shared and enjoyed with fine wines and cocktails. Most recently Mike appeared on TV1's breakfast show demonstrating one of his potato and steak dishes.
In the 5 years on its opening, Molten has received many accolades including:-

Mike will be doing a cooking demonstration involving some of his favourites garlic dishes. We thank you for his time in coming down from Auckland to be part of our garlic-lover's festival
Gary Lees, Café Rue, Dunedin
Gary is a modest chef who let's his food do the talking. Gary has worked with some pretty amazing chefs and been around and round again. He spent some time cooking over seas, but found that he missed being able to pick mushrooms from a paddock; the real taste of a tomato and the true taste of fruit from central Otago along with the wines; venison; the oysters from Stuart Island and white bait from our rivers. After working for big companies over seas, Gary and his partner Brenda, (a very accomplished hospitality person) decided that they wanted to Òdo their own thingÓ in Dunedin. So they returned to Dunedin to open their own restaurant - Cafˇ Rue. Their two children were also a great influence in returning to New Zealand as they wanted to bring their our children up in a great place that has every thing and more. Cafˇ Rue is where they are and good food and service is what they do!
Gary will be doing a cooking demonstration involving some of his favourites garlic dishes. We thank you for his time in and being part of our garlic-lover's festival
Michael Rozenberg, French Connection, Dunedin
Michael is originally from Slovakia, and has been a chef for 25 years. He moved to NZ and set-up his own cafe in Greytown. Now residing in Dunedin with his wife and two children, he has been achef with French Connection for the past two years. Michael is very passionate about his food and loves Dunedin.
